This itinerary explores Tanzania’s southern circuit, visiting the less-visited but equally spectacular Selous Game Reserve (now Nyerere National Park) and Ruaha National Park.

Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam

  • Arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. Your guide will transfer you to your hotel.
  • Overnight in a hotel in Dar es Salaam, preparing for your southern circuit adventure.

Day 2: Dar es Salaam – Selous Game Reserve

  • After breakfast, take a domestic flight to Selous Game Reserve, the largest protected wildlife reserve in Africa.
  • Upon arrival, check into your lodge/tented camp and have lunch.
  • In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safari along the Rufiji River, where you’ll spot crocodiles, hippos, and an array of birdlife.
  • Return to your camp for dinner under the stars.
  • Overnight in Selous Game Reserve.

Day 3: Full Day Game Drive in Selous Game Reserve

  • After breakfast, embark on a full-day game drive in Selous. The park is renowned for its large populations of elephants, giraffes, and predators such as lions, leopards, and wild dogs.
  • Enjoy a packed picnic lunch in the bush, surrounded by stunning scenery.
  • Optional activities include a walking safari with an armed guide, offering an intimate perspective of the flora and fauna.
  • Return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Selous – Ruaha National Park

  • After an early morning game drive or boat safari, take a flight to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s second-largest park.
  • Ruaha is known for its rugged landscapes, baobab forests, and large elephant populations.
  • Arrive in Ruaha and check into your lodge/tented camp. Enjoy lunch and relax before embarking on an afternoon game drive.
  • Spot lions, leopards, and rare antelope species such as greater kudu and sable antelope.
  • Dinner and overnight in Ruaha.

Day 5: Full Day Safari in Ruaha National Park

  • Enjoy a full day of game drives in Ruaha National Park, exploring the park’s diverse habitats from the Great Ruaha River to the rolling hills and plains.
  • Ruaha offers excellent predator sightings, with large prides of lions, cheetahs, and leopards frequently spotted.
  • Picnic lunch in the park, followed by an afternoon of game viewing.
  • Return to camp in the evening for a relaxing dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Walking Safari & Game Drive in Ruaha

  • Begin the day with a walking safari, allowing you to explore Ruaha’s wilderness on foot with an experienced guide. Learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem, including tracks, plants, and birdlife.
  • Return to camp for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive where you may encounter large herds of elephants or predators on the hunt.
  • Dinner and overnight in Ruaha.

Day 7: Ruaha – Selous Game Reserve

  • After breakfast, take a flight back to Selous Game Reserve for one more opportunity to explore its wilderness.
  • Afternoon game drive in Selous, with chances to spot hippos, crocodiles, and the park’s resident wild dogs.
  • Dinner and overnight in Selous.

Day 8: Boat Safari and Relaxation in Selous

  • Start the day with a relaxing boat safari along the Rufiji River, where you can observe wildlife coming to the river to drink.
  • Spend the rest of the day at leisure, enjoying the amenities of your lodge or tented camp.
  • Optional evening game drive or walking safari.
  • Dinner and overnight in Selous.

Day 9: Departure from Dar es Salaam

  • After breakfast, fly back to Dar es Salaam.
  • Depending on your flight schedule, you may explore Dar es Salaam city, visiting landmarks like the National Museum or the Kivukoni Fish Market.
  • Transfer to Julius Nyerere International Airport for your departure flight.
